Purpose

Mercer University has set forth a policy for motorized vehicles and transportation devices to maintain safety on campus.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, faculty, and staff at Mercer University.

Policy Statement

Registered cars, trucks, and motorcycles are permitted on campus on authorized and designated University roads and parking lots only and must be operated in accordance with state and federal laws and Mercer Police guidelines. Similarly, authorized golf carts, maintenance equipment, and recognized mobility devices for individuals with a disability, are permitted on university property. Visitor vehicles must operate in accordance with Mercer Police guidelines and are restricted to visitor parking.

All other motorized vehicles/transportation devices not listed above are prohibited on University property. These include, but are not limited to segways, hoverboards, electric scooters, and any other transportation device that is powered by a motor.

Non-motorized devices such as bicycles, skateboards, and kick scooters are permitted on campus but must be operated under control, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and provide the right of way to pedestrians. Non-motorized devices are operated at the user’s own risk. Except for recognized mobility devices for individuals with a disability, non-motorized devices are not permitted to be operated in any University building, including residence halls, at any time and may not be stored in public areas inside of buildings.

Student violations of the above policy may result in Mercer University Police confiscating and holding the vehicle/device until the case is reviewed and/or adjudicated by the Office of Student Conduct Resolution. Employee violations will be reviewed by the employee’s supervisor and the Associate Vice President for Human Resources. All questions, clarifications, or exceptions to the above policy should be addressed to Mercer University Police.
