Prerequisite Course: Course in which a student must earn a grade of “C” or better to enroll in future course(s) and maintain degree progress.

Policy Statement

Repeating Prerequisite Courses

Mercer University courses with an earned grade of D may be retaken at another institution to satisfy a Mercer prerequisite requirement. Courses that are equivalent to courses offered at Mercer will transfer as long as the host institution is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the student earns grades of C or better in the courses. Course outlines (syllabi) and catalog information may be required before approval for transient status is granted.

If a previously attempted prerequisite course is repeated at another institution as a transient student, only the second attempt will count toward degree progress. Duplicate credit will not be awarded; credit hours will be granted only once for any given course.

The previous grade(s) of the prior attempt(s) will not be deleted from the student’s academic transcript.

Courses taken at another institution will in no way affect the student’s Mercer cumulative grade point average; however, all transfer credit attempted will be considered when determining University honors at graduation.

Transient Permission to Repeat Prerequisite Courses

A student may receive transient permission to enroll in a course at another institution if the student did not earn a C or better in a prerequisite course at Mercer University and the student is unable to re-enroll in the same course at Mercer University to maintain degree progress.

Approved transient credit may not be earned concurrently with Mercer credit.

Courses taken at another institution will in no way affect the Mercer cumulative grade point average; however, all transfer credit attempted will be considered when determining University honors at graduation.

If the student repeats a course at another institution without prior approval as a transient student, credit will not be accepted by Mercer University and the course will not apply to the student’s degree program.
